As children with Reactive Attachment Disorder grow older, they may develop either inhibited or disinhibited behavior patterns. While some children have signs and symptoms of just one type of behavior, many exhibit both times

  • Disinhibited Behavior: Children with disinhibited behavior seek attention from virtually
    anyone, including strangers. This may happen when baby has multiple caregivers or
    frequent changes in caregivers. Children with this type of Reactive Attachment Disorder
    may frequenty ask for help doing tasks, having inappropriately childish behavior or
    appear anxious.

    Our friend's son, who has Disinhibited Reactive Attachment Disorder, is living with us for 6 months, the object for him to try and find out what he wants to do with his life. He is 17 years old and shows all the classical symptoms of the disorder. To us, as lay-people, it seems nothing so much like he is completely disengaged with life. He has no specific interest in anything, no preference for any kind of food, unable to say what he likes and dislike, no shyness towards any adult, even complete strangers and when he does focus on something, it is usually something more likely to catch the attention of a 10 year old, the focus of his attention often seems to surprise him immensely and he will ask questions about it that addresses some commonplace aspect of the object or event, questions once again, more likey to be asked by a young child, is often childlike in his behaviour when faced with even a simple problem.
